About PREFcards

Built by surgeons. For surgical teams.

PREFcards was started in 2013 by two brothers — a plastic surgeon and an anesthesiologist — who couldn't stand watching another surgical case get delayed because of a broken preference card. What began as a side project at their own surgery center has grown into the platform powering preference card management at health systems across the country.

Our story

It started with a broken preference card. And a brother who'd had enough.

In 2013, brothers Paul and Brandon Reynolds had reached their breaking point. Brandon, then a relatively new plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, was watching the same scene play out at every facility he worked in: he'd submit his preferences carefully when he joined a new center, ask for revisions when something didn't fit, and weeks later find that nothing had actually changed. Disposable supplies were being wasted on items he didn't use. Necessary instruments were missing when he needed them. Circulators were spending precious minutes between cases trying to decipher cryptic, handwritten setup notes that hadn't been updated in years.

Paul, as the anesthesiologist standing across the table, had to live through all of it — including the post-case venting from his brother. So Paul decided to do something about it.

The brothers recruited the most talented programmer they knew, and the three of them sat down to ask a simple question: what would a surgical preference card system look like if you built it from scratch, with today's best technology, designed by the people who actually use it? Not paper. Not Word documents. Not a feature bolted onto an EHR. A real, cloud-based, intuitive 21st-century platform built specifically for the way surgical teams actually work.

That became the first version of PREFcards™. They started using it at their own surgery center, and even without a sales team, a marketing plan, or a single trade show booth, demand started growing on its own. Other surgery centers caught wind of what they were running and asked to try it. Corporate offices for larger health systems noticed. As the platform expanded, the brothers built out a business team alongside the engineering work — committed to a single goal that hasn't changed since day one: build the finest surgical preference card solution on the market.

PREFcards has been doing exactly that ever since.
